A perfect day in Madrid

Flamenco dancer, Madrid, Spain

We asked Elena Rodriguez, Press Officer at the World Travel & Tourism Council and Madrid native what makes for a perfect day in Madrid.

I’m from Ciudad Lineal, very close to the Plaza de Toros in Ventas. Whether you are into art, food, nature, or even football, Madrid has something for everyone. There are endless possibilities in Madrid. We have a saying in Madrid that goes de Madrid al cielo ("from Madrid to Heaven"), as there is nothing quite like this city.

On my perfect day in Madrid, you’ll find me in the garden at the Sorolla Museum (and it's only €3!) and Quinta de los Molinos park, perfect to see the flowering of almond trees in Spring. If you are into food markets, go to Mercado San Antón, it has a beautiful rooftop perfect for cocktails too. The history of this market dates back to the nineteenth century. I always recommend Pez Tortilla to anyone who wants to try a proper Spanish tortilla. Thank me later!

The one thing I look forward to the most about going home to Madrid is the people. Nothing better than sitting on a terrace, enjoying the sun with your friends. That and obviously croquetas.

Croquetas, traditional Spanish dish, local cuisine, bar

Croqeutas are a staple in Madrid

When you toast, say "Pa’ arriba, pa’ bajo, pa’l centro, pa’ dentro!". It literally means “Up, down, to the center, inside”, and it doesn't get more Spanish than that.

One song for your holiday playlist - "Lady Madrid" by Pereza. They are a rock group from Madrid and there is no better ode to the city than this love letter.
